Prim. Dr. Sergej Mihailovič Marasanov was born in 1980 in Pula, and attended elementary school completed his high school education in Buja, where he graduated from Opča in 1998 gymnasium. In the same year, he studied medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zagreb, where he graduated in 2004, earning the title of Doctor of Medicine.
He completed his mandatory medical internship at KBC Zagreb, where in 2007 started specializing in neurosurgery. During his specialization, he was on several occasions at education abroad (INI Hannover, Germany 2008; vertebroplasty course Leiden, The Netherlands, 2010; hands-on lumbar instrumentation course Maribor, Slovenia 2010, HD endoscopic neurosurgery course Greifswald, Germany 2013, endoscopic course of Thoracolumbar Spine Surgery, Tuebingen, Germany, 2014) having acquired competencies for performing minimally invasive neurosurgical procedures, especially in the field of surgery spine. As a resident, he completed four modules of the EANS Training Course and passed final European neurosurgery exam, obtaining the European Diploma in Neurosurgery. He passed the neurosurgery specialist exam in 2013, and since 2016, in addition to the cranial and he started spinal microsurgery with education and work in the field of radiosurgery by joining the Department of Functional, Stereotactic and Radioneurosurgery of the Clinic for neurosurgery of KBC Zagreb. In 2017, he was awarded a Steiner scholarship Leksell’s Gamma Knife Society, and spent a three-month fellowship at the Clinic for neurosurgery at La Timone Hospital, Marseilles, France.
He had the honor of being an invited lecturer at the World Neurosurgery Congress 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and in 2023 at the European Neurosurgery Congress in Barcelona, Spain, as well as several times at international congresses and professional meetings in in Croatia and abroad.
He is a member of the Teaching Board of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) and as the teacher conducts the education of neurosurgery residents from all European countries at EANS international courses.
He is a graduate student of the scientific post-graduate study of Biomedicine and Health at the Medical School Faculty of the University of Zagreb.

He is a native Italian speaker, an excellent English speaker, with conversational level of knowledge of the French language.
