Prof. Dr. Sc. Vanja Bašić Kes, MD, specialized in neurology, is the President of the Croatian Society for Neurovascular Disorders, the Croatian Medical Association, and the Croatian Society for Neuroimmunology and Neurogenetics, as well as the President of the Croatian Society for Pain Prevention and the Croatian Stroke Society. She is also the head of the Medical Affairs Committee for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Croatia, and a member of the Commission for Acupuncture and the Commission for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation of the Croatian Society.
Prof. Dr. Sc. Vanja Bašić Kes graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zagreb in 1993 and began her specialization in neurology at the Clinic for Neurology of the Clinical Hospital “Sestre Milosrdnice” in Zagreb in 1997. She successfully passed the specialization exam in neurology in 2001, and defended her doctoral dissertation in 1999. Since 2001, she has worked as a specialist neurologist at the Clinic for Neurology of the Clinical Hospital “Sestre Milosrdnice” in Zagreb, and since 2006, she has been a subspecialist in intensive medicine in the field of neurology. In early 2008, she was elected as the head of the Department of Neuroimmunology and Neurogenetics and the head of the Pain Center at the Clinic for Neurology of the Clinical Hospital “Sestre Milosrdnice,” and in 2011, she became the head of the Clinic for Neurology at the same hospital.
Prof. Dr. Sc. Vanja Bašić Kes has extensively trained abroad, including at King’s College Hospital in London, UK, and Weill Cornell College/American-Austrian Foundation in Salzburg, Austria. She has actively participated in numerous international congresses throughout her professional career.
She has been involved in education throughout her career, serving as a professional collaborator at the Anatomy Department of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Zagreb from 1993-1997, and being appointed as a scientific collaborator at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Zagreb in 2005. In 2008, she was appointed as an associate professor at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Zagreb and a senior scientific collaborator at the same faculty in 2010. She has been an associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Osijek since 2011.
Currently, she is a full professor at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Zagreb since 2018 and a scientific adviser at the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Zagreb since 2013. She has authored or co-authored four university textbooks and numerous manuals, including manuals on cognitive problems in multiple sclerosis patients, dysphagia in neurological patients, the use of intravenous immunoglobulins in the treatment of neurological diseases, and multiple sclerosis as a disease with a thousand faces. She is also the head of the Reference Centre of the Ministry of Health for Neuroimmunology and Neurogenetics at the Clinic for Neurology at the “Sestre Milosrdnice” Clinical Hospital, the head of the Reference Centre for Neurovascular Diseases of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Croatia at the Clinic for Neurology at the “Sestre Milosrdnice” Clinical Hospital, and the head of the Fabry Center and the Center for Prevention of Cerebrovascular Diseases at the same hospital.
