Prof. Dr. Krešimir Rotim, MD, PhD, neurosurgeon

Prof. Dr. Krešimir Rotim, MD, PhD, is a neurosurgeon and a member of the World Academy of Neurological Surgeons (WANS). He serves as the Vice President of the World Federation of Neurological Societies (WFNS) and is also the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Zagreb. He was awarded the City of Zagreb Prize for outstanding achievements in medicine.

Prof. Dr. Krešimir Rotim was born on April 23, 1967, in Vukovar. He enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb in 1985 and served in the military from 1986 to 1987. During his studies, he was awarded three Rector’s Awards for the best scientific research. He graduated in 1991 and worked as an internist and general practitioner at the Ministry of Interior’s Health Center until 1993. He started his residency in neurosurgery at the Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb in 1993 and earned a Master of Science degree in 1996 from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Zagreb. He became a board-certified neurosurgeon in 1998 and continued working at the Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb as a specialist until 2005, when he worked at the Clinical Hospital Dubrava. He defended his PhD thesis in 2000 at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Zagreb. In 2006, he was appointed the Head of the Neurosurgery Clinic at the Clinical Hospital “Sisters of Mercy”, where he still works today. He served as the Director of the Hospital from 2008 to 2012.

Prof. Dr. Krešimir Rotim is actively involved in teaching neurosurgery at multiple universities, including the University of Split, the University of Mostar, and the University of Zagreb. He is a regular professor at the University of Osijek since 2017. He also holds various other positions, such as being the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Zagreb and the Head of the Anatomy Department at the same university. He earned a University Specialist in Economics degree from the Faculty of Economics, University of Zagreb in 2012 and is currently pursuing a PhD in economics at the University of Rijeka.

Prof. Dr. Krešimir Rotim is also involved in different committees and councils, such as being a member of the National Health Council and the Scientific Committee of the Croatian Parliament. He served as the President of the Commission for Revision of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs from 2014 to 2021 and is a member of the Scientific Council for Biomedicine and Health of the Agency for Science and Higher Education. Additionally, he is active in sports medicine and serves as the Head of the Health Commission of the Croatian Handball Federation and the Croatian Football Federation. He is also involved in organizing both national and international scientific congresses and conferences.

Prof. Dr. Krešimir Rotim has received several awards and recognitions for his achievements in the field of medicine and neurosurgery. Some of these include:

– Večernjakov pečat award for Scientist of the Year in 2010

– City of Zagreb Prize in 2018

– Ladislav Rakovac award from the Croatian Medical Association in 2017

– The Order of Ante Starčević from the President of the Republic of Croatia in 2020

He is a member of several professional associations, including the World Federation of Neurological Societies and the World Academy of Neurological Surgeons. He is also a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.

Prof. Dr. Krešimir Rotim has authored and co-authored numerous books and textbooks on neurosurgery and related topics. He has also contributed chapters to books on sports medicine, surgical oncology, and other fields.

He holds various leadership positions in medical associations such as being the President of the Croatian Society for Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery, the President of the Croatian Society for Spinal Surgery, and the Chairman of the Expert Council of the Croatian Medical Association. He is a former President of the Southeast European Neurosurgical Society and is currently the Honorary President.
