dr. sc. Tomislav Čengić is a specialist in orthopedics and traumatology with a narrower interest in minimally invasive, arthroscopic surgery and reconstructive surgery and the installation of artificial joints.
He has been attending a specialist internship since 2011, at the Traumatology Clinic of the Clinical Hospital Center of the Sisters of Mercy in Zagreb and the Orthopedics Clinic of the Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb, after which he takes a specialist exam in orthopedics and traumatology. In 2014, he completed the Specialist postgraduate study in orthopedics and traumatology at the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb. He defended his doctoral dissertation entitled “The effect of anteversion of the cementless femoral component of the “Zweymüller” hip endoprosthesis on primary stability and proneness to periprosthetic fracture – a biomechanical study on an artificial bone model” at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zagreb under the mentorship of prof. Domagoj Delimar and prof. Janoš Kodvanja in 2021. It is an interdisciplinary study carried out at the Orthopedics Clinic, Faculty of Medicine and Laboratory for Experimental Mechanics, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Shipbuilding, University of Zagreb. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka in 2009 and, after a professional internship at the Clinical Hospital Center of the Sisters of Mercy Zagreb, passed the professional exam.
While training abroad in 2021, he is staying at Center Orthopédique Santy, Lyon, France, learning techniques of arthroscopic and minimally invasive hip surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Mathieu Thaunat. In 2016, he stayed at the London Sarcoma Unit, Royal National Orthopedic Hospital, London, United Kingdom, under the mentorship of prof. Will Aston. In 2014, he resided as a clinical and research associate at the Clinic for Orthopedics and Traumatology, Universitätspital Basel, Switzerland, under the mentorship of prof. Geert Pagenstert, and as an associate at the Bone & Soft Tissue Sarcoma Centre, Universitäs-Kinderspital beider Basel, Switzerland, under the mentorship of prof. Fritz Hefti. In 2008, he resided at the Department of Emergency and Intensive Care Medicine, Hyogo Medical College, Japan, as part of an international student exchange.

He is the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards for innovations in medicine. In 2015, he was awarded the State Award of Technical Culture of the Republic of Croatia “Faust Vrančić” for a 3D reconstructive pelvic implant made to the patient’s measurements by three-dimensional titanium sintering. In 2021, he was awarded the American-Austrian Foundation (AAF) Bone&Joint Fellowship organized by AAF and Weil Cornell Medical School, New York, USA. In 2014, he received a Musculoskeletal Tumor Fellowship organized by AAF and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, USA. 2003-2009 In 2008, he won a scholarship from the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports for particularly gifted students. In 2006, he was awarded the Rector’s Award of the University of Rijeka, and in 2005, the Award of the Faculty of Medicine in Rijeka.
Since 2014, he has been a member of the Osteoarthritis Research Center Basel with the research topic “The role of subchondral bone stem cells in bone remodeling”.
He is a lecturer at the Department of Anatomy and Physiology of the University of Health in Zagreb. He is a mentor for several graduate theses. He is the author of 3 university textbooks and over 20 scientific and professional papers. He is a member of the editorial board of the medical scientific journal Acta Clinica Croatica. He is a member of the Croatian Orthopedic Society, Croatian Association of Orthopedists and Traumatologists, Osteoarthritis Research Center Basel, EFORT (European Federation of National Associations of Orthopedics and Traumatology), ESSKA (The European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy), and SICOT (Société Internationale de Chirurgie Orthopédique et de Traumatologie). Since 2010, he has been the doctor of the Zagreb Handball Club and the Croatian national handball team.
He speaks English and German fluently.
